Members of the US House Armed Services Committee will visit Ankara to discuss issues concerning US-Turkey relations, according to reports citing unnamed sources in Turkey.
According to the same sources, in the meeting they will have with the Turkish Minister of Defense, Yasar Güler, the Turkish side will, among other things, put to the four members of the American commission the Turkish positions on the process of procurement and modernization of the Turkish F-16 fighters , defense procurement projects pending congressional approval, counter-terrorism and U.S. support for the YPG Kurdish group in northern Syria, which Ankara links to the PKK, which operates against Turkey.
The US delegation will also meet with Hulusi Akar, former defense minister and current chairman of the Defense Committee of the Turkish National Assembly.
As is standard practice, the weekly press briefing by Turkish Defense Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Zeki Akturk is followed by reports attributed to “sourced” answers to journalistic questions within the same briefing.
At the same time, according to Bloomberg, the US Pentagon will procure 166 thousand 155mm howitzer ammunition from the Turkish defense industry company Arca Defense. All of the munitions are scheduled to be delivered to the Pentagon this year, and additional orders are expected next year.
According to officials planning the procurement, the US also aims to get trinitrotoluene, known as TNT, and nitroguanidine, which is used as a propellant, from Turkey.
In addition, by 2025 another Turkish defense industry company will install lines in Texas for the production of 155 mm howitzer ammunition. The lines to be created will cover 30% of the total production of US 155mm howitzer ammunition. In this way, it is sought to cover Ukraine’s ammunition needs.
It is known that the sale of ammunition requires permission from the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Ministry of National Defense. However, as reported by Bloomberg, it has not yet been confirmed whether the said export permit has been issued.
