The attack took place in the northern Turkish city of Samsun on Saturday evening, Anadolu said. The video, taken from a nearby house, shows a woman lying on the floor while a man kicks her head and body several times and punches her in the face. Their 5-year-old daughter is standing next to it and is crying.
Local residents called an ambulance, Anadolu said. The woman suffered no life-threatening injuries, according to official reports. The alleged perpetrator was arrested that same evening.
The video was widely shared on social media and sparked anger. President Erdogan’s communications director said on Twitter that the matter would be closely followed. The organization ‘We are going to stop the murder of women’ calls for laws to protect women.
According to the organization, at least 300 women were murdered by men in Turkey last year. In half of the cases, the partner was the murderer.
A manifestation is planned in Istanbul on Monday to mark International Women’s Day.
