Turkey has announced that it will conduct naval military exercises with combat ammunition off the coast of Cyprus between Saturday and Monday.
Turkey has announced in the maritime information system NAVTEX that shooting exercises will take place on the coast of Sadrazham in northern Cyprus.
The statement came after European Union (EU) southern leaders warned on Thursday that they were ready to support sanctions against Turkey if it avoided dialogue.
The issue will be discussed at the EU leaders’ summit on 24-25 September and is expected to be a key topic.
Cyprus and Greece have called on the EU to impose new restrictive measures on Turkey.
In the eastern Mediterranean, where significant natural gas reserves are considered to be located, Turkey is also exploring in the areas claimed by Cyprus and Greece.
The EU has so far imposed only limited sanctions, including a travel ban and an active freeze on two people involved in research activities at sea.
