The National Security Council of Turkey, which met under the chairmanship of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, proceeded with the revision of the “National Security Policy Document”, the so-called “Red Book”.
At the end of the meeting at the presidential palace in Ankara, which lasted about 3.5 hours, a statement was issued in which special reference is made to developments in Syria and the Kurdish region. It is also noted that the ceasefire in Gaza must be permanent and constitute the beginning of a just settlement of the Palestinian issue.
In detail, the text of the announcement states that “the National Security Policy Document has been updated, which is updated regularly every five years and urgently when necessary”.
According to the statement, the Council was briefed on the operations being carried out “at home and abroad against all kinds of threats and dangers against our national unity and solidarity and our survival, in particular against terrorist organizations” and specifically against Kurdish organizations PKK and YPG, against the FETO Gulenists accused of the 2016 coup attempt, and against the Islamic State.
At the same time, it is emphasized that the Kurdish militia in northern Syria, which Ankara identifies with the PKK, will not be allowed “to exploit in any way the current situation and possible developments in Syria” and it is repeated that “all terrorist organizations, which they are enemies of the friendly and brotherly peoples of our region, they will be eliminated by any means.”
The Council notes that “full support will be given to the will of the new government in Syria to ensure the sovereignty, unity, territorial integrity and political unity of the state and to guarantee the fundamental rights and freedoms of all ethnic and religious groups in country, as well as in the reconstruction of Syria and the peace and prosperity of the Syrian people.”
For the cease-fire in Gaza, Turkey’s National Security Council calls for it “to be permanent and to be the beginning of a just solution to the Palestinian issue” and points to the need for uninterrupted, continuous and rapid delivery of humanitarian aid.
It also accuses Israel that its aggressive actions, “which completely ignore International Law and extend into Syrian territories, are an obstacle to efforts to ensure stability in the region.”
The announcement concludes by noting that “Turkey will continue to contribute to the establishment of global peace and stability by intensifying its activities to ensure the resolution of conflicts in various regions of the world, especially in Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, before they turn into conflicts, as well as for the peaceful resolution of ongoing conflicts.”
