Turkey: The Erdogan government continues its fight with Instagram – “We are a country with laws and rules” – 2024-08-04 04:58:55

Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure stated that the government’s decision to block access to Instagram was made because the social media in question does not cooperate in the fight against crime, thus indirectly denying that the shutdown is because it does not allow the posts about the assassination of the head of the Hamas Politburo, Ismail Haniya.

Specifically, the competent Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglou said: “There are some social networking platforms that are outside our country, but they have representatives in our country. There are certain rules, laws, regulations and legislation that we want implemented. From time to time, we see some problems in their compliance, despite the warnings we have made. We have a framework we call the crime list. We warned them in this context, but since we did not find the necessary response, we imposed an access block on them.”

He also said that “we are in contact with them. Our sensibilities are clear. The shortcomings are clear. Once they eliminate these deficiencies, we will remove this obstacle. We are a country with laws and rules.”

It is recalled that by a decision of the Directorate of Information Technologies of the Turkish government, access from Turkey to Instagram was suspended from August 2. After the access restriction was imposed, some media and many users on the other social networking platform X reported the fact that Instagram does not allow posts about Ismail Haniya.

With his post, the representative of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Fahrettin Altun, had accused Instagram two days ago for “cutting” her posts about the Haniya murder. “This is censorship, plain and simple. We will defend freedom of speech against these platforms that have shown many times that they are primarily in the service of the global exploitative system of injustice,” wrote Fahrettin Altun.
