Jakarta –
Victims died as a result of the earthquake that rocked Turki and Syria continues to grow. A total of 2,316 people are now reported dead.
Reported by AFP, Tuesday (7/2/2023), the earthquake left at least 2,316 people dead and 13,293 injured.
Emergency services say 7,340 people have been rescued so far. The update brings the total number of victims to the earthquake at Turki and neighboring Syria to 3,613.
The death toll is expected to increase. In addition, aftershocks are also predicted to continue for days or weeks.
As previously mentioned, there were several factors that caused the earthquake to cause many fatalities. Some of these factors are the time of occurrence, location, relatively calm fault lines to the weak construction of buildings that collapse.
The earthquake caused devastation partly because of its strength and because it hit populated areas. Another reason is because the earthquake occurred at 04:17 (0117 GMT), which means that people were sleeping.
“They were trapped when their house collapsed,” honorary researcher at the British Geological Survey Roger Musson told AFP.
Building construction is also not “absolutely adequate for areas prone to major earthquakes,” he said.
The other thing that is partly due to the fact that the fault line where the earthquake occurred was relatively calm recently.
