Turkey slams Canada for delaying selling weapons in connection with the Armenian War

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Turkey criticize the decision Canada which suspended arms exports over alleged involvement in the war Armenia and Azerbaijan. Ankara accuses Ottawa of practicing ‘double standards’.

“We hope Canada pursues a policy that is far from double standards and acts without influence from anti-Turkish circles in the country,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement. AFP.

“If Canada does not see a disadvantage in exporting arms to countries militarily involved in the Yemeni crisis and presents sales as a contribution to regional security, then there is no other explanation for preventing arms exports to its NATO allies,” the statement added.

Turkey has publicly expressed support for its longtime ally Azerbaijan in the battle for Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian province that broke away from Azerbaijan in a bitter war in the 1990s.

However, Ankara dismissed the issue that their troops were involved in supporting Azerbaijan’s military strength.

In a press conference on Friday (2/10), Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Azerbaijan had not requested military assistance from Turkey over the conflict in Karabakh. However, Cavusoglu stated that his party was ready to provide support to Baku.

The plan is for Cavusoglu to visit Azerbaijan on Tuesday (6/10) to discuss the heating up conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. During the visit, he was scheduled to meet with President Ilham Aliyev.

The visit came a day after Russia, the United States and France asked Armenia and Azerbaijan to agree to an “unconditional ceasefire” after escalation between the two sides continued in the disputed territory.

Nagorno-Karabakh is an ethnic Armenian province that broke away from Azerbaijan in the 1990s during the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1992-1994, tensions peaked and exploded into large-scale military action. Peace settlement talks have been going on since 1992 under the OSCE Minsk Group led by Russia, France and the United States.
