Turkey Signs Protocol on Sweden’s NATO Membership: Ratification Process Underway

Erdogan has signed the protocol on Sweden’s NATO membership. It is now submitted to the National Assembly for ratification.

The news is announced by the Turkish presidential office, writes Reuters.

It happens a few days after NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg again brought up Sweden’s NATO application in a conversation with the Turkish president on Saturday.

It arouses excitement in Sweden.

– Good news that Turkey’s President Erdoğan has now handed over the ratification documents to the Turkish Parliament. Now it remains for the Storting to deal with the matter. We look forward to becoming a member of NATO, writes Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, on X.

NATO meeting on Tuesday

On Tuesday, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson will meet Stoltenberg in Stockholm. Kristersson recently told news agency TT that he “is convinced that this will be resolved relatively soon”.

– Spoke to President Erdogan about terrorism and the situation in the Middle East. We agree that terrorism must be fought and that civilians must be protected. I am pleased that emergency aid is now reaching Gaza. We also addressed Sweden’s NATO membership, Stoltenberg wrote on X, Saturday.

Turkey and Hungary are the only ones of NATO’s 31 member states that have not yet ratified Sweden’s application for membership. Finland’s NATO application was ratified by the two countries in March.

Gives Sweden an ultimatum

Stilte F-16-ultimate

Earlier this year, Turkey’s National Assembly said it would approve Sweden’s Nato application if the US gave the thumbs up for Turkey to buy F-16 fighter jets.

Turkey requested in October 2021 to purchase 40 F-16 aircraft, as well as access to parts and technology to upgrade 79 combat aircraft that Turkey already has. The agreement has an estimated value of 6 billion dollars.

However, the US Congress has so far said no to a sale to Turkey.
