One of the sources said that Turkey did not publicly announce the restrictions for “political reasons”. According to the publication, the ban was introduced after Washington warned Ankara about the “consequences” of such trade with Moscow. Turkey’s trade ministry and Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov did not respond to FT requests for comment.

Turkey’s exports of dual-use goods to Russia increased dramatically shortly after the start of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine. In the first months of the war, according to the official statistics of the Turkish authorities, the number of exports of such goods was about three million dollars per month and reached its peak in December 2022.

Turkey was one of the countries that Vladimir Putin’s regime used to circumvent Western restrictions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ankara maintains good relations with Moscow, but at the same time it is dependent on Western countries militarily and economically.
