Turkey Officially Ends Implementation of CFE Treaty – Latest Updates and Reactions

Turkey is ending the implementation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), the country officially announced today, a few months after Russia withdrew from the pact, and the US also ended its implementation, Anadolu Agency reported, quoted by BTA.

Turkey has not withdrawn from the pact, but is ending its implementation, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Yonçu Keçeli said in a written statement.

Russia withdrew from the treaty on November 7 last year and “as a result, there is no possibility to continue the meaningful implementation of the treaty,” Kecheli said.

He added that the suspension of the pact could be reviewed.

“To this effect, a statement was made to the NATO Council on November 7. We also made a statement announcing our decision with its rationale. The date on which the decisions of NATO allies to suspend the implementation of the treaty will come into force is determined by each ally within the framework of national legislation,” the spokesperson added.

“Currently, the decision to terminate the implementation of the treaty by the majority of NATO members who are parties to the CFE Treaty has entered into force. The domestic legal process for the termination of our implementation of the CFE Treaty ends on April 8, 2024, and a presidential decree on this matter was published in the country’s state gazette on April 5, 2024,” Kecheli added.
