Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched through downtown Istanbul tonight to protest the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.
Haniya was killed in Tehran, in an attack that fueled further concerns that the conflict in the Gaza Strip is turning into a wider war in the Middle East.
Demonstrators held posters and photos of the political leader of Hamas while placards read “Martyr Haniya, Jerusalem is our goal and your course is our course.” They also shouted slogans such as “Kill Israel, out of Palestine” and “Thousands of greetings from Istanbul to the resistance in Gaza” while holding Turkish and Palestinian flags as they marched through the city’s Fatih district.
Although the hit to Haniya is widely believed to have come from Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has not claimed responsibility and said it would not comment.
Earlier, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the attack on Haniya in Tehran and said his death would not deter Palestinians.
