Turkey wants the extradition of four former Bulgarian border policemen. This became clear at today’s meeting of the Turkish Criminal Court in Kirklareli.
Former border guards Mihail Tsonkov, Nikolay Petkov, Nikola Kostov and Zhivko Petkov are accused in a case for the death of a Turkish poacher.
The incident happened on our border near Rezovo in 2008.
Now the former border guards have been put on a red notice by Interpol and if they leave Bulgaria, they can be detained, said the Turkish lawyer defending the Bulgarian border guards Joshkun Molla.
“An answer is expected from the Bulgarian side about the implementation or the non-implementation. The Ministry of Justice sent Interpol the request for the detention of the four Bulgarian border guards.
“They want their extradition to Turkey. It is not just about questioning in Bulgaria and sending statements, but they simply want to be extradited. With a “red bulletin” they are wanted,” said lawyer Molla.
In 2018, the Burgas District Court terminated the criminal proceedings against the border policemen, initiated at the request of the authorities in our south-eastern neighbor, who, ten years after the border guards were acquitted in all the courts in our country, insisted that they be questioned again.
The magistrates in Burgas then referred to the 1976 legal assistance agreement between Bulgaria and Turkey, which stipulates that the parties accept without objection verdicts in criminal cases handed down in the other country. And they categorically and definitively refused to fulfill the demands of our southern neighbor.
