Turkey expresses concern about political turbulence in Somalia

The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement about the electoral process in Somalia, and expressed concern about negative developments triggered by disagreement over the process in recent days.

“It is important that the Federal Government and the leaders of the Local Administration try to resolve the disagreements through inclusive and constructive dialogue on the platform of the consensus reached on the date of September 17, 2020,” said Foreign Ministry, which convened all parties so that they avoid acts that could unleash violence.

“Turkey is confident that the friendly and fraternal Somali people have the will to determine their own destiny and political maturity. In this framework, we hope that reconciliation will be achieved without delay regarding the electoral process on the basis of mutual understanding ”, he concluded.

On February 15, the opposition presidential candidates summoned the public to take to the streets to protest against the permanence of the president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo despite the fact that his mandate had expired on February 8.

Tension increased when the Government banned all events and meetings on February 17 on the pretext of the resurgence of cases confirmed by Covid-19 while the opposition prepared to hold mass demonstrations.

This Sunday a car bomb attack in the Somali capital of Mogadishu claimed the lives of 2 people and injured many others.
