Reported AFPThe earthquake occurred in the city of Gaziantep, Turkey, Monday (6/2) local time. The earthquake was so strong that it was even felt in Cyprus, Egypt, to Greenland, an area very far from Turkey.
The epicenter was at a depth of about 17.9 km in the city of two million people. After the first earthquake shook, tens to hundreds of aftershocks occurred.
The head of the Syrian National Earthquake Center, Raed Ahmed, told pro-government radio that this quake was “according to history, the largest recorded earthquake in the history of the epicenter”.
The United Nations (UN) reported this was the strongest earthquake in more than 80 years. Finally, an earthquake of this magnitude occurred in 1939, killing 33,000 people. Now, Erdoğan has set a three-month emergency response period for the earthquake.
“We will soon complete the Presidential and Parliamentary process regarding this decision, which will cover our 10 earthquake-affected provinces and will last for three months,” President Erdogan said.
