At least 42 people have been killed in government-held areas of Syria, according to state media. The Syrian official news agency “SANA” quoted Assistant Minister of Health Ahmed Damiriyeh as saying that there were 42 dead and 200 injured in Aleppo, Hama and Latakia as a result of the earthquake, indicating that the outcome is not final.

For his part, a medical source told AFP in opposition-held areas near the border with Turkey that at least eight people were killed in the collapse of many buildings.

The Syrian Civil Defense, which operates in opposition-held areas, said on Monday that the strong earthquake that shook Turkey and northern Syria left “dozens of victims”.

He confirmed that there are people stuck under the rubble of collapsed buildings in the northwest of the country.

The Civil Defense, known as the White Helmets, added in a post on Twitter that the volunteer group is working to save the survivors.

For his part, the Syrian Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmad Damiriyeh, told the regime news agency, SANA, that there were “42 deaths and 200 injuries in Aleppo, Hama, and Latakia as a result of the earthquake, in an indefinite toll.”

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the number of victims “is more than 35, dozens of injured people in several Syrian regions, and dozens of buildings destroyed.”

Videos spread on social media showed the extent of the destruction in many Syrian regions.

In the latest death toll, Agence France-Presse quoted Turkish officials as saying that “at least 53 people were killed in the earthquake.”

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck, at dawn on Monday, the Bazarjik district of Kahramanmaraş province, in southern Turkey, according to the official Anadolu News Agency.
