The also imprisoned Kurdish politician Selahattin Demirtas expressed his support for the decision to be taken by the leader of the Kurdish organization PKK, Abdullah Ocalan, who is imprisoned on the island of Imrali in Turkey.
The former co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democracy Party (HDP), banned by the Turkish authorities, Selahattin Demirtas, who is imprisoned in the prisons of Edirne, said in a message that he has full confidence and support for Abdullah Ocalan, who a few days ago announced that he is ready to contribute positively to the initiative of President Erdogan’s ultra-nationalist government partner, Devlet Bakhceli, for a Kurdish solution.
The leader of the Nationalist Action Party, political wing of the far-right Gray Wolves, has proposed the conditional release of Ocalan, who is serving a life sentence, on the condition that he renounce armed violence and ask the PKK, which he founded in 1977, to lay down his arms.
A delegation of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) visited Öcalan in Imrali last month and, after receiving his positive response, began a series of contacts with the leaders of the parties represented in the Turkish National Assembly, while today he also visited Demirtas.
In his message, Selahattin Demirtas thanks the country’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Devlet Bakhceli, the chairman of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, Ozgur Ozel, and all other party leaders for the initiatives they have taken and will take for the peace.
He emphasizes that “the most sensitive issue at this time is the support of public opinion. Therefore, transparency is extremely important and necessary.”
He also states that “if Mr. Öcalan takes the initiative on this issue when the conditions are right, we will be by his side” and “as he (Ocalan himself) has also stated, the responsibility for creating the legal and political basis for such an invitation belongs to to the government and the Parliament”.
Demirtas notes that their responsibility as politicians is “to increase the peaceful, political struggle for democracy, freedoms, equality, justice and fundamental human rights” and added: “The channels and possibilities of this struggle must be opened now, so as to strengthen the ground for peace.”
According to the Kurdish politician, “all those who speak about these issues should stay away from the language of threats, blackmail, humiliation and provocative speech and instead of creating an empty and meaningless rhetoric based on the rhetoric of defeat, they should focus on a common future where we all win.”
He also notes that in order for the peace process to take shape, concrete confidence-building steps must be taken quickly. “We are ready to provide all kinds of support to eliminate the conflicts, which have been causing untold misery in these lands for years and are draining all the energy of the country, as well as to implement a political peace.”
He adds, however, that “political peace will be lasting and in the interest of everyone and the country only if it is done in a way that opens all the channels of the struggle for social peace, democratization, equality, justice and freedoms”.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan intervened again today in the ongoing process to resolve the Kurdish issue, but avoided naming the PKK and the DEM.
“A new window of opportunity is opening before our country to end the scourge of terrorism. The only goal of the recent efforts is to disband the terrorist organization, lay down its arms and give the party, which cannot become Turkey’s party due to pressure from the separatist organization, an opportunity to develop in this direction,” he said. the Turkish president speaking at the conference of the prefectural organization of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Diyarbakir, southeastern Turkey.
“It’s about closing a half-century of separatist terrorism. This will remove one of the biggest obstacles in front of a great and strong Turkey,” said Tayyip Erdogan.
