“It is with deep sadness that we learned that the citizen of our country, Eisenur Ezgi Evgi, was killed by Israeli occupying soldiers in the city of Nablus (…) We condemn this murder committed by the Netanyahu government,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry announced about the 26-year-old woman who was accepted bullet to the head.
“Israel tries to intimidate anyone who comes to help the Palestinians and fights peacefully against the genocide,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement, denouncing a “crime against humanity.”
Fouad Nafaa, commander of Rafidiya Hospital in Nablus, told Reuters and AFP that the woman was taken to the hospital in a very critical condition, with a serious gunshot wound to the head. “We tried to resuscitate her, but unfortunately she died,” he said.
The US said it was “urgently” seeking more information about the activist’s death. Anthony Blinken expressed his regret for the “tragic” death of the American citizen and pledged that Washington will take the necessary measures.
“We mourn this tragic loss,” Blinken told reporters in the Dominican Republic where he is visiting. “When we have more information available, we will share it and act accordingly,” he stressed.
Who was Eisenur Ezgi Evgi?
The girl, who was participating in a demonstration in support of the Palestinians near one of the “advanced” Jewish settler settlements next to Beite settlement in the Nablus region, had only arrived in the West Bank last Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera. In the same incident, a young Palestinian was slightly injured
Eigi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement, an organization that tries to stop settler attacks on Palestinian farmers and ranchers in the occupied territories.
Two more members of the same organization were killed by the Israelis in Gaza, Rachel Corey in 2003 and Tom Hardal in 2004. Both have become symbols of international support for the Palestinian people. Their murder of a young American woman is expected to trigger a new wave of criticism against Israel, both in the United States and in Turkey.
