Turkey condemns ‘coup’ in Tunisia, deemed illegitimate and alarming

TUNIS – Some senior officials Turkey condemned the president’s actions Tunisia who seized full executive power by sacking the prime minister and dissolving parliament.

Tunisian President Kais Saied dissolved Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi’s government on Sunday evening, freezing parliament and taking over executive authority with the help of the new prime minister.

In his speech, Saied said he would lift the immunity of all MPs and take on the role of public prosecutor.

He said he had made the decision after consulting Mechichi and Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi.

“The suspension of the elected parliament and the sacking of the government in Tunisia are worrying. As Turkish citizens, we have always been supporters of the achievement of a friendly and brotherly Tunisian democracy,” Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Twitter.

Oktay added Turkey’s support for a democratic Tunisia would continue.
