BAGU: Turkey coach Cenol Kuns has blamed various factors for his team’s “unacceptable performance” at Euro 2020, but does not plan to resign amid pressure to return home.
Turkey, who finished at the top of Group A after losing all three games, drenched like dark horses to perform better in the tournament, but would go home after a poor attempt.
The match against Switzerland on Sunday closed out Turkey’s match as they started the fire at a rapid pace and fell quickly, overtaking them tactically before Switzerland could complete a 3-1 victory.
“This young team will mark the next 10 years of Turkish football, but we are well aware that such a performance in these matches is unacceptable,” said Kuns.
“I am responsible for this,” Guns added, adding that the media response was due to the inexperience of his players, personal mistakes and misfortunes for the team’s worst performance in a European Championship.
The 69-year-old, who finished third to surprise Turkey at the 2002 World Cup, has led again since 2019.
“I’m not thinking of quitting now, the bill for failure must be paid, but the media is responsible, management is responsible, the coaching staff is responsible,” Guns said.
“Players and personal mistakes are also responsible. Before the game, we were expected to play in the final, and now we are being heavily criticized. “
“It was a great test for us, but sometimes these failures can add more experience than success,” Guns added.
Advocate Mary Demirel acknowledged that the experience was painful but had important learning points.
