For several weeks there have been major discussions about the lack of export of grain out of Ukraine.
In this connection, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has mediated the talks to try and get an agreement between Russia and Ukraine in place.
On Thursday, the Turkish presidential office announced that an agreement could be signed as early as tomorrow, according to the Reuters news agency.
Gets a visit from the UN
– Russia, Ukraine and Turkey are gathering on Friday to sign an agreement proposed by the United Nations to free grain exports from Ukraine’s besieged Black Sea ports, Erdogan’s office said in a statement.
Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will attend an event with Erdogan in Istanbul on Friday.
On Wednesday, the Russian president came out harshly, where he demanded that the West remove sanctions against the country in order for an agreement to be put in place.
– We will facilitate the export of Ukrainian grain, but we assume that all restrictions related to air freight for the export of Russian grain will be lifted, Putin told the press in Tehran after talks with the presidents of Iran and Turkey.
Bragged by Erdogan
It is not the first time that Putin has demanded the removal of sanctions to secure the export of Russian grains, but on Tuesday the president confirmed that there had been progress in the negotiations and used the opportunity to brag about the unrestrainedness of Erdogan.
– With your mediation, we have made progress, Putin told Erdogan, without any details being made known.
The war against Ukraine has led to greatly reduced grain exports out of the country, due to Russian blockades of Ukrainian ports in the south of the country.
This in turn has led to a fear of a global food crisis, which is expected to hit particularly poor countries hard.
