Turkey is changing its name. Our southern neighbor has decided to change its name, thus the authorities will rebrand the country’s image to the world, TRT television reported.
Earlier this month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement saying the country’s internationally recognized name was changing from “Turkey” to “Turkiye”, the television reported.
“The word ‘Turkiye’ best represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation,” the statement said.
In Turkish the country is called Turkiye. It adopted the name after gaining independence from Western powers in 1923, which temporarily occupied it. Throughout history, Europeans have known it as an Ottoman state. It is then known by many variations of the word “Turkey”. The most commonly used name was the Latin “Turquia” and the most common was the English “Turkey”. However, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, the word “turkey” means turkey.
From now on, “Turkiye” will be used in all kinds of activities and correspondence, as well as in official relations with other countries and international institutions and organizations, instead of “Turkey”, “Turkei”, “Turquie” and the like.
The new name will be officially registered in the coming weeks at the United Nations.
