Turkey Blocks Passage of UK Minesweepers to Black Sea Amid Russia-Ukraine War

On Tuesday, the press service published a response to unnamed media reports that trawlers will be allowed into the Black Sea.

According to the 1936 Montreux Convention, the press service explains, in the event of war, Turkey must close its straits to the ships of the warring parties.

Ankara has done this when Russia attacked Ukraine, according to the press service.

“Our relevant allies have been duly informed that minesweepers donated by the UK to Ukraine will not be allowed to pass through the Turkish Straits to the Black Sea for the duration of the war,” the statement said.

Great Britain and Ukraine agreed on the transfer of two “Sandown” class mine trawlers to Kyiv in 2021.

The ships were repaired and modernized, but the Ukrainian crews were already trained in Great Britain.
