Helicopters and firefighting planes, which remained grounded overnight, continued to battle the blaze today, according to news broadcaster NTV.

The forest fire has now spread to residential areas in Izmir, Turkey.
Turkey is currently fighting forest fires across four provinces: Canakkale, Bolu, Izmir, and Manisa.

This morning, the sky was still full of gray smoke from the side of Karsikaya, the district of Izmir where the fire started, while the smell of smoke can be felt throughout the city, a person from the area told AFP by phone. , who asked not to be named.
One hundred residents of five areas were evacuated from their homes overnight, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Gerlikaya announced.

“The total area affected is about 16,000 acres. (…) At the moment, two planes and eleven helicopters are continuing the operations,” said the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, who assured that residents of urban areas should not “worry”.
Intervention at the point where the fire started is difficult because of “steep valleys”, the minister explained.
Sixteen apartment buildings were damaged by the fire and 78 people were injured, of which 29 needed to be hospitalized, the Turkish Ministry of Health announced.
Six other fires are still raging in forest areas in other cities in Turkey, including Bolu (northwest) and Aydinio (west).
