Ankara intends to create a 30 km wide security zone on the border with Syria “to suppress terrorist threats emanating from the region.”
Turkey plans to conduct a military operation to create a 30-kilometer security zone along the country’s southern borders as part of countering terrorist threats. About this at a press conference on May 23 declared President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“The areas that are the main targets of frequent attacks are a priority for our activities,” he stressed.
According to the Turkish leader, the operation will be launched as soon as the military, intelligence and security units complete their preparations.
As Turkish journalist Rajip Soylu wrote on Twitter, the goal of the military operation should be to create a “security zone extending 30 kilometers deep into northern Syria.”
He clarified that Erdogan was referring to the territory controlled by the Syrian Kurdish Self-Defense Forces (YPG).
