Turkey and the United States Enter a New Stage of Relations

Relations between Ankara and Washington have reached a new stage. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a meeting with his American counterpart Joe Biden on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Vilnius.

“I believe that the time has come for consultations at the level of heads of state within the framework of the strategic mechanism. Today, I consider this meeting (of Turkey and the United States – approx. URA.RU) on the fields of NATO as the first step towards this. <…> Now we are starting a new stage.” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, his words are reported by Cumhuriyet. He also said that the past meetings between Washington and Ankara were a warm-up.

Earlier, Western media wrote that Erdogan asked Biden to provide Turkey with F-16 fighter jets in exchange for Ankara’s approval of Sweden’s admission to NATO, writes MK.RU. Also, the Turkish leader had a telephone conversation with the American president before the summit of the alliance. During the conversation, Erdogan expressed hope for support for Ankara’s entry into the European Union at the meeting, reports Life.
