/ world today news/ Ankara urges descendants of emigrants from Bulgaria and other countries in the region to obtain dual citizenship

Descendants of emigrants from Bulgaria living in Turkey can obtain Bulgarian citizenship according to the new option for electronic government of the country, with which emigrants and migrants can study their family tree, BGNES reported.
Turkiye newspaper reports that millions of citizens in Turkey attacked the new program during the week and managed to discover the roots of their ancestors. Descendants of emigrants from Bulgaria are the most active, along with descendants from Macedonia, Greece and Romania. They are already taking the legal steps to obtain a second citizenship in Europe.

It is specified that Bulgaria grants dual citizenship without any problems. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Macedonia and Romania are also in the same column.

However, Greece requires proof of the Greek origin of mother, father, grandfather, grandmother or great-grandmother and then initiates the procedure for providing documents.
Those wishing to obtain dual citizenship must apply to the Ministries of Justice, Foreign or Internal Affairs, or the consulates of the respective countries. They can also use the services of legal offices that have permission for this activity. Their documents must be translated and notarized.

Those citizens in Turkey who learn from the new program that their ancestors arrived from Bulgaria must submit applications to the General Directorate of Civil Registration and Administrative Services (DG GRAO), which is subordinate to the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice, the Turkish newspaper also informed. Descendants of Romanians and Bosnians should contact the consular offices of the respective countries and present documents proving the origin of their ancestors. Those wishing for Macedonian citizenship can submit the necessary documents to the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Skopje. People whose applications for the new citizenship have been refused have the right to sue the respective country through international and Turkish courts.

In “Hurriet” specifies that after the cutting of the territories of the Ottoman Empire, large processes of migration to Turkey from the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Crimea, the Aegean islands, the Arab countries began. The most intense migration flows were recorded after 1878, 1912 and 1923. Therefore, those researching their genealogy should look for documents in the archives of the General Directorate of Citizenship, in which it is noted where the relevant refugees arrived from.
The last resettlement of Bulgarian Turks under a bilateral agreement between Ankara and Sofia was in 1978, followed by the wave of refugees in the summer of 1989 after the so-called “revival process”.
