A 4.9-magnitude earthquake occurred at 21:39 Turkish time (20:39 Greek time) in the Yenice region of Daradanellia (Canakkale) prefecture in northwestern Turkey. The focal depth of the earthquake was located at 10.44 km.
The earthquake, in addition to the Dardanelles and neighboring prefectures, was felt in Istanbul, heightening residents’ concerns, given seismologists’ estimates of an imminent major earthquake on the part of the northern Anatolian fault that passes south of Istanbul into the Sea of Marmara.
The Agency for Natural Disasters and Emergencies (AFAD) announced that crews have started on-site investigations to check if there is any damage. No injuries or collapses have been reported at this time.
Turkey’s Minister of Interior, Ali Gerlikaya, in a post on Platform X notes: “All teams of AFAD and related agencies have started on-site scans for the 4.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Yenisei, Canakkale. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring prefectures. There is no negative status at this time. We are monitoring the developments.”
