SURHUISTERVEEN – “Oh what a beautiful day today…” A young mother walks with her two children through the shopping street of Surhuisterveen. She receives a flower from the duo Tuorke and Jurre, which makes the smile on her face even bigger. “Please, for Mother’s Day,” Jurre clarifies. Many dozens of women are made happy in this way.
On the occasion of Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May, Tuorke and Jurre hand out yellow, pink, white and purple flowers on behalf of the shopkeepers of Surhuisterveen. “Please, take a look,” Jurre says kindly during the handover. – “Oh, how sweet, thank you,” is the grateful response. ‘Mama mia’ sounds from the speaker on the cargo bike. The music is also in the right atmosphere on this summer Saturday afternoon. “We are mothers,” announce two older women who are afraid that the duo will pass them by. Of course they also receive a present. “You are so generous,” says two ladies who wait their turn and receive a hug from Tuorke in addition to flowers.
‘I’ll give you a present and I’ll add some flowers,’ is how Andre van Duin’s Mother’s Day song sounds from the cargo bike, making both women and other shoppers happy. A man who watches the scene from a distance gives the duo a tip: “Do we get Heitedei in a case of beer?” Tuorke and Jurre are not yet revealing this surprise for the men. “But I am not yet a mem,” a young lady shyly refuses the flower that is offered to her. “You will probably be a very sweet mother,” Jurre expects, as she hands her the present. She gratefully accepts it. The flowers are very popular, a new stock must be collected regularly. “It really runs like clockwork.”
A number of ladies beckon from a shop, Jurre doesn’t think twice and rushes into the shop. A little later, flowers are shared on terraces. A group of four women cannot wait that long and rush towards the floral beauty before Jurre can get off the bike. “Free flowers, seine se, is that wie?” Of course they also receive a beloved flower.
