Referendums was held on Monday, with a turnout of 30.5% of the 9.2 million voters. More than 2.6 million people supported the new constitution in the referendum, the head of the election commission Faruk Buaskar announced at the press conference.
The referendum came a year after Saeed dismissed the government and suspended parliament. His opponents called for a boycott of this referendum.
The new constitution envisages the elimination of the mixed presidential-parliamentary system that was established by the 2014 constitution, which Tunisia earned acclaim as the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring.
The leader of Said’s envisioned “new republic” will have full executive power and will be able to single-handedly appoint a government without the participation of parliament. The president will also be the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and will appoint judges.
Saeed had previously announced that the next step would be a new electoral law. His political plans also include parliamentary elections later this year.
Said’s opponents, including the Islamist party “Ennahdha”, which has occupied a dominant position in Tunisian politics since 2011, accuse the president of restoring autocracy in the country.
In July 2021, Saeed dissolved the government, suspended parliament and expanded his legislative and executive powers. In March of this year, he dismissed the parliament. The president later removed dozens of judges, accusing them of corruption.
