The Tunisian government has announced that it has decreed a new general containment in four regions where the rate of contamination exceeds 0.4%, while hospitals are struggling to treat the most serious cases in certain areas of the country.
The governorates of Beja (north-west), Siliana, Zaghouan (north) and Kairouan (center) will be confined for a week, until June 27, the presidency of the government said in a statement posted on Facebook on Sunday.
These are the regions that have recorded more than 400 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the last 14 days.
Faced with the deterioration in these regions, regional screening campaigns and isolation centers for positive cases will be set up, said the services of Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.
Examinations underway in schools will nevertheless continue in these regions, the same source said on Saturday evening in another press release.
The military health services were mobilized this week to deal with the deteriorating situation in Kairouan, where health establishments are struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
Tunisia, which has lifted most restrictions as the tourist season approaches, with the exception of a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, is currently registering dozens of deaths and more than 2,000 new confirmed cases per day for 12 million inhabitants.
The country has detected 38,1175 cases confirmed by tests and 13,960 deaths since March 2020, according to the Ministry of Health.
