The former soldier Gabbard never had a serious chance to secure the nomination. In the previous primaries, she could hardly secure votes. Among other things, Gabbard has promoted the demilitarization of US foreign policy. But she had to defend herself against allegations that her candidacy was supported by Russia and the only aim was to weaken the Democrats.

Republican Trump has repeatedly defended Gabbard against these allegations – which is why some Democrats viewed them with even more skepticism. Gabbard traveled to Syria in 2017 to meet President Bashar al-Assad. She was heavily criticized for the trip.
Originally, almost 30 applicants had tried to run for the presidency. The Democratic primaries actually last until June. The candidate will then be selected at a nomination party conference in July. The presidential election is scheduled for November 3.
