Tulio Mendoza launches two new books

In the midst of the pandemic, the writer Tulio Mendoza continues creating: he has just finished two new works, which will soon be released in virtual format.

“I have just edited two books in Ediciones Etcétera. “In a blink of an eye” (stories) and “Coins / Looks” (short poems). Both projects are winners of the public competition of the National Book and Reading Fund, in line of support for the publishing industry. In addition, “Monedas / Miradas /, obtained the grant for literary creation from the same fund, in 2015, he commented.

Of his works, he highlighted that “in terms of literature, my stories follow the writing of my previous book ‘The man with the knife and other stories’ (2013). I have always said that they are the stories of a poet. This book, ‘In a blink of an eye’, includes ‘For a lady from another time’, a second-place winning text in the Stella Corvalán National Literary Contest that the municipality of Talca and its Cultural Corporation annually convene ”.

In that sense, he added that “regarding ‘Coins / Looks’, the texts that make up this book take up, in some sense, the beginning of my writing: short, condensed, suggestive, mysterious poems that are close to the flash of Japanese haikus. As the title indicates, it implies that texts are like ‘coins’, objects that are minted, circulated and exchanged and have a value and an authority and ‘looks’, glimpses, glances, an action and a mode, an expression: the poems are ways of looking, expression of eyes that have seen and glimpse and imagined ”.

On the process of both works, he said that “’Monedas / Miradas’ dates from before 2015 when he obtained the creation grant. And before, in 2011, some of these poems were selected in the IX Gonzalo Rojas Poetry and Prose Literary Contest, from Lebu (…) In relation to stories, I generally write in cycles and I don’t stop. There are 13 of different themes in which the fantastic, the mystery, the police, have great importance ”.
