Tucumán began vaccination against COVID-19 in children under two years of age

This morning, the Minister of Public Health, Luis Medina-Ruiz, launched the inoculation campaign at the Niño Jesús hospital. He invited families to go to the effectors to prevent serious cases of coronavirus in children. Which other centers will be vaccinating in the province.

“With great joy we begin the last stage of vaccination, intended for children from six months to two years, 11 months and 29 days. It is the last age group that was missing,” said the head of the health portfolio.

And he continued: “When vaccination against COVID began, we started with older adults and people who were vulnerable, but the virus mutated in such a way that it began to affect pregnant women and children. Now we have this vaccine that allows us to protect them from getting a serious illness.”

Before the press, the authority explained that the vaccine that will be given to minors is Modern, previously approved by the Pediatric Society and ANMAT, with all the security it requires. It is an immunization in a multidose vial, from each vial 10 doses are taken, that is why initially they are vaccinating in hospitals. Together with the effector of the Child Jesus, the campaign began in synchrony in the hospitals: Néstor Kirchner, Eva Perón, Avellaneda, and in the interior in Monteros, Concepción and Aguilares. It can also be found at the Family Vaccination Center.

“The vaccine is already available, you don’t have to take shifts, just go to the hospital from Monday to Friday. As for the expected effects, only local pain and some low-grade fever may appear. We have not seen any health problems in children over three years of age that we have already vaccinated, no adverse reaction, different from what adults have, ”she pointed out.

Now, if the fever is less than 37.5°C, the professional indicated giving him paracetamol, but always recommended making a consultation because it could be due to the vaccine or any other cause. “The warning signs in a child that indicate seriousness in any condition are that the baby rejects the breast or the bottle and does not feed properly; and that he does not sleep. Given this, they have to take him to the medical consultation, “he said.

And he warned: “Above all, we recommend vaccinating children with pathologies, who have a basic respiratory or neurological disease. In addition, if they should know that, if the child had laboratory-proven COVID, they must spend four months like all people, to get the vaccine. If it is close contact for a week and the boy has no symptoms, he is directly vaccinated.”

For her part, the director of the establishment, Dr. Cristina Alabarse, thanked the Minister of Public Health for carrying out this important event, which is the opening of vaccination for these children.

“We invite all parents to know that the hospital is open for care if they have any questions. We have had serious cases at the beginning of the pandemic, but the situation of the patients was changing in children and adults. Being better positioned against the virus, we owe it to vaccines. We have children hospitalized with COVID, who are not as serious as those children we had in the first stage,” she commented.

Then, the head of the hospital vaccination center, Dr. Sánchez, explained that the vaccination center is open from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “They can attend on demand, but we need parents to bring the vaccination card and the child’s data to be able to register it. We do an evaluation when she enters the vaccination center to see if she is in good health, and it is determined if she can be vaccinated or not. There is no contraindication to vaccinate unless you are experiencing a significant fever or have been in contact with relatives with coronavirus, ”she pointed out.

Newly born

“We can ask ourselves what happens to children under six months, why they are not immunized. A baby from newborn to six months, should be exclusively breastfed, does not need us to give him water, or additional milk, or any other element. With exclusive breast milk we are offering her all the defenses and antibodies against all the diseases that the mother had. For this reason, we promote the vaccination of pregnant women; if the pregnant woman is vaccinated, she is passing antibodies to the baby during her intrauterine life and then when she is breastfeeding, the boy is protected not only against COVID, but also against the flu and all the diseases that the mother had or from which immunized with vaccines”, recalled Medina Ruiz.

Testimonials

Paula Barros, Valentino’s mother, a patient vaccinated at the effector, said: “I think it’s very good that it starts for everyone, it went very well for me with the vaccines, I trust them. When they told me that the vaccination for the boys was going to start, I wrote it down for my baby. It’s a good way to protect our boys.”
