Despite the significant progress made in the fight against tuberculosis in the WHO European Region and the steady decline in incidence, tuberculosis continues to pose a threat to public health in most countries of the region.
According to the WHO, in 2021, 1.6 million people died from tuberculosis (including 187,000 people with HIV). Globally, TB is the 13th leading cause of death and the second leading infectious killer after COVID-19 (ahead of HIV and AIDS).
In 2021, an estimated 10.6 million people became ill with tuberculosis (TB) worldwide – 6 million men, 3.4 million women and 1.2 million children. Tuberculosis is present in all countries and age groups. But tuberculosis is treatable and preventable.
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remains a public health threat. In 2021, only about 1 in 3 people with drug-resistant TB had access to treatment.
Between 2000 and 2021, an estimated 74 million lives have been saved through TB diagnosis and treatment.
The incidence of tuberculosis in the country for 2021 is 10 per 100,000 population, with 687 registered persons with tuberculosis. For comparison, in 2012, their number was 2,280, maintaining the tendency for the number of men to be more than twice as many larger than that of women.
Ending the tuberculosis epidemic by 2030 is among the health goals of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The implementation of the National Program for the Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis in Bulgaria for the period 2021-2025 aims to reduce the incidence of tuberculosis in the country.
