Tsvetelina Penkova: We cannot risk Bulgaria’s energy security with quick and thoughtless actions – 2024-02-18 13:42:23

/ world today news/ “The intention of the governing majority of GERB and PP-DB to sell to Ukraine the equipment acquired by Bulgaria for the Belene NPP is further proof that in recent years the state strategy for the development of the Bulgarian energy sector has been a series of improvised decisions, which serve short-term political interests, foreign and domestic.”

This was stated by the MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP Tsvetelina Penkova. She also argued: “We cannot risk Bulgaria’s energy security with quick and thoughtless actions. Such a decision puts the economic development and progress of the country at risk. It has not been discussed with industry representatives and our international partners. The national security of Bulgaria cannot be allowed to be compromised in pursuit of short-term image advantages.”

Tsvetelina Penkova asked several questions regarding this decision:

“1. Can the commissioning plan of a nuclear power plant be changed without consent, permission and license from the producer (in this case Rosatom)?

2. Is it in the interest of the Bulgarian state to “hurriedly” sell energy equipment of this scale, at a price lower than the market price?

3. Is it completely safe to provide such equipment to a country in a military conflict?’

She answers these questions with a firm NO.

According to her, the “Belene” NPP can be completed with the help of France. “A decision can only be made after a detailed study and a proposal for the implementation of the project. We currently risk losing a serious competitive advantage on an already advanced project. This is happening in the situation of a serious energy crisis in Europe”, commented the MEP.

“The procedural grips of the rulers and the way of convening the extraordinary meeting of the Energy Commission “from today to today” pose important questions. Why?

Bulgaria is slowly but surely leaving behind its past as an energy center of the Balkans. This draft decision shows a neglect of the country’s needs for large base capacities. This is not an isolated process, but a continuation of our country’s unclear position on important energy projects,” Tsvetelina Penkova said. According to her, it is

a long-term horizon is necessary when planning the energy infrastructure that will underpin our economy for the next 50-70 years.
