/ world today news/ The MEP and the Ministry of Defense in the BSP are working on legislation for start-ups
“Young people are the engine of technological progress. Technology and innovation are best developed through the enthusiasm, knowledge and energy of new generations. Young people always want to leave their unique mark.” This was stated by the MEP from the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP Tsvetelina Penkova to the participants of the conference “Innovations and technologies – the future of Europe”, which she organized together with the Youth Union in the BSP. The event was attended by the chairman of the Youth Union – Gabriel Valkov, Vladimir Georgiev – mayor of the municipality of Samokov, representatives of venture capital management funds, people’s representative Atanas Zafirov and many municipal councilors of the BSP. An event highlighted the importance of innovations and showed how European and national policies can help their development at the regional level.
“Innovation is increasingly central to our economy and everyday life. They are a major tool for achieving the green and digital transition, they have added value for citizens, industry and the public sector,” added Penkova. She pointed out that innovative solutions very often originate from “startups” and small and medium-sized enterprises: “They are the main means for the European Union to become a leading force in innovation and technology on the world stage. They are the engine for sustainable recovery and development, the energy and digital revolution.”
“The investment in the development of young people in our country is an investment in the future of Bulgaria. It is for this reason that we are organizing this extremely important discussion on innovations and technologies, because this is what the future of Bulgaria should be – progressive and modern,” stated the chairman of the BSP Youth Union, Gabriel Valkov.
Tsvetelina Penkova noted that the main goal of the EU should be to achieve competitiveness vis-à-vis the USA and China. She is of the opinion that this can happen if the EU acts as a whole, not to be considered as a collection of member states. State policy plays a key role in this area: “Each member state must create more opportunities for growth, more jobs, access to more markets. Only in this way will we help our startups and companies realize their full potential and be competitive on the European and global market.”
“I am extremely proud that after a year of efforts and negotiations in the European Parliament, I am initiating a legislative proposal for the European start-up industry – “Strengthening the industrial and technological competitiveness of the EU through innovation and a favorable environment for the development of start-up and scale-up enterprises” . I will be the main negotiator in the European Parliament,” Tsvetelina Penkova told the conference.
“The new legislation will unite all the initiatives created so far at the EU level. It will unify the legislation of the member states in this area, unify the financing conditions for technological and innovative projects and create a clear framework for cooperation between start-ups and the scientific community,” explained Penkova.
She believes that the EU should strive to take a leadership position in the development of start-ups and scale-ups. “These companies must have a favorable environment in order to realize their full potential and be competitive on the European and global market. This cannot happen without common policies. They must provide security, predictability and convenience to entrepreneurs and continue to innovate and develop technologies,” the MEP pointed out. In order to achieve this, Tsvetelina Penkova indicated several steps: strong state and European support for research and development; increasing and promoting public and private investments in the field; removing and mitigating existing financial and administrative barriers and difficulties for start-ups and SMEs; promoting the international exchange of talent, ideas and good practices.
The MEP pointed to data: through innovation and new technologies, the EU has the potential to increase the productivity of its economy by nearly 20% and add around €3 trillion by 2030.
