Leadoff hitter Ben Gamel added three hits and a walk, and Jacob Stallings had two hits in a 12-point attack by the Pirates.
Chasen Shreve (2-1) pitched a batter in the sixth, striking out Matt Carpenter. David Bednar, the Pirates’ sixth pitcher, allowed a single to open the ninth, but struck out the next three batters for his first save.
Genesis Cabrera (2-4) allowed three runs and four hits in the seventh inning for the loss.
St. Louis entered the engagement three and a half games behind Cincinnati and San Diego in the fight for the second National League wild card.
JA Happ made his fourth start as a member of the Cardinals since they acquired him from the Twins. Happ, 37, allowed six hits and one walk with eight strikeouts in six innings.
