Wave tsunami occurred after the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano in Tonga erupted. The tsunami waves were claimed to have been detected in Indonesia.
A tsunami expert from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Semeidi Husrin, said tsunami waves were detected in the south of Java Island. The tsunami was detected by an inexpensive measuring device for sea level (PUMMA).
“Yes, that’s right, that’s how it is. Indeed, the equipment installed in the south of Java to the west of Sumatra caught the anomalous signal. And after we analyzed it, it is most likely from the impact of the tsunami that occurred in the Pacific,” said Semeidi when contacted, Wednesday (19/1/2022). ).
He said PUMMA records data in a meeting because data collection is done every 5 seconds. So wave tsunami which is not too high recorded by PUMMA.

“About 20 cm, it’s not big, because Australia is blocked and far from the Pacific. Thank God Indonesia has a small tsunami,” he said.
He said there were 8 PUMMA units installed in the southern part of Java Island and the western part of Sumatra. The water level anomaly signal was recorded on January 15 at 20:14 WIB.
“The biggest, an inch or about 20 cm is Prigi Jawa Timur. The others are below that,” he said
He said PUMMA or also called Inexpensive Device for Sea level Measurement (IDSL) had been installed for 3 years in the south of Java and west of Sumatra.
He said the tool is also cheap to manufacture and maintain. In addition, local people can take care of this tool.

“This is in the future, the relevant authorities can adopt this. It has been 3 years of installation and so far, thank God, the performance is still good and the data is good, the price is cheap, the maintenance is cheap,” he said.
Semeidi said PUMMA is jointly managed by the KKP, LIPI, BPPT, the association of tsunami experts, the Geospatial Information Agency, and the BMKG.
