Tsunami Can Occur 2 Minutes After the Central Maluku Earthquake

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG) reveal potential tsunami nontectonic is over earthquake magnitude 6.0 in Central Maluku, Maluku. The tsunami can occur in just two minutes.

Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati explained that the non-tectonic tsunami was not triggered by an earthquake. This tsunami is caused by landslide cliffs under the sea or on the beach.

“The tsunami was very fast, that is, it could come in just two minutes, it could take only two minutes, as happened in Palu,” Dwikorita said at an online press conference on the InfoBMKG Youtube channel, Wednesday (16/6).

Dwikorita said that there was no technology capable of providing non-tectonic tsunami early warnings. According to him, developed countries such as Japan have not been able to read this potential.

Dwikorita asked residents around the coast in Central Maluku to always be vigilant. He asked residents to evacuate immediately if they felt strong aftershocks.

“You don’t have to wait for an early warning from BMKG. Immediately if you are on the beach, immediately look for a higher place, more than 20 meters, because it is feared that a tsunami will come within 2 minutes,” he said

Dwikorita said that an earthquake with the potential for a tsunami could be seen from the shaking felt. According to him, if residents feel a sway or are about to fall during an earthquake, it is highly likely that a tsunami will occur.

“If you feel an earthquake shaking and you are on the beach, then immediately without waiting for an early warning, without waiting for the sirens, just run to higher ground,” he said.

Previously, the BMKG detected an earthquake measuring M6.0 in the waters of Central Maluku. The epicenter of the earthquake was 69 kilometers southeast of Masohi City at a depth of 19 kilometers below sea level.
