The quake’s epicenter was about 60 miles southeast of the village of Perryville.
The United States, among others, has issued a warning for Alaska and a number of islands. The chance of a tsunami is still being examined for other parts. The alarm has also been raised in Hawaii.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center has already calculated the time at which a possible tsunami would reach certain parts of the world, such as the American west coast.

Even New Zealand is investigating the possibility of a tsunami. It would then arrive at the coast of that country in 12 hours. However, all authorities emphasize that the investigation is still ongoing.

Alaska also issued a tsunami warning last October after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. This led to evacuations, but in the end there were no casualties. In 1964 Alaska was hit by a magnitude 9.2 earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in North America. Then a tsunami hit coastal areas in the US. More than 250 were killed.

According to noted American meteorologist Matthew Cappucci, the Pacific Plate has shifted below the North American Plate. “That moves large amounts of seawater.”

“The earthquake created a shock that shifted the ground up to four inches per second,” says Cappucci. “That doesn’t sound like much, but consider that an entire landscape moves.”
