TSMC’s future plans are to create chips with 1 trillion transistors, and it will be possible to achieve this by 2030.
TSMC is so far optimistic that it will be able to develop the next generation of production nodes in the next five to six years, even though the development of processor technology has slowed down in recent years. The manufacturer predicts that even more complex monolithic circuits with more than 100 billion transistors will soon be available. Today, Nvidia’s 80 billion transistor GH100 remains one of the most complex monolithic processors on the market. However, building such massive processors is becoming more complex and expensive, leading many organizations to use multi-chip architectures such as AMD’s Instinct MI300X and Intel’s Ponte Vecchio.
According to TSMC, this trend will continue, and in a few years we will see multi-chip systems with more than trillions of transistors. To achieve this, TSMC also anticipates advances in packaging technology. At the same time, monolithic chips will become even more complex, since processors will contain 200 billion transistors.
