Dresden – There has been speculation about this for months, now the signs are increasing. According to a media report, the Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC is about to decide to settle in Dresden.

The decision is expected to be made at the company’s board meeting on Tuesday, according to the “Handelsblatt“With reference to government circles. All formalities have been clarified. The Federal Ministry of Economics did not want to comment on the report on request.
According to the “Handelsblatt”, the federal government has promised to support the factory construction with five billion euros, which would be around half of the targeted total costs of ten billion euros. The funding is to come from the federal climate and transformation fund (KTF).
TSMC primarily wants to produce chips for the automotive industry in Dresden – together with its partners Bosch, Infineon and NXP.

As late as June, the Taiwanese spoke of concerns about the settlement and made the availability of sufficient skilled workers a condition.
As soon as the TSMC board has given the green light, the company could sign a letter of intent with the federal government about the funding.
The EU Commission would then have to make the final decision on funding.

However, the TSMC plans are likely to be in the interest of the EU. In order to make Europe less dependent on imports from Asia, the EU states have provided 43 billion euros for the promotion of production sites.
