This time, you will not only play as one character, but also other characters that Activision introduced during its promotion. Including female soldiers from Russia who are experts in using sniper rifles or snipers.
Unfortunately, the game’s campaign felt half-baked when I finished it. I was only impressed by one character who was really unique in his approach. What’s the game like? Here’s an overview of my personal opinion after playing and finishing Call of Duty: Vanguard.
Call of Duty: Vanguard have a fairly short campaign mission between 4-6 hours, and even then depending on your character often dies or not. You will play about five characters in the story with additional characters that you will not play again in the future.
Some of these characters are team leader Arthur Kingsley, sniper Polina Petrova, demolitioner Lucas Riggs, and pilot Wade Jackson. These four characters have one mission, namely to bring Project Phoenix back to the allies and capture one of the leaders of the Nazi German army, Hermann Wenzel Freisinger.
In short, the main mission has a fairly short duration, because throughout the game you will only play the past missions of each character. While the main mission is only a few parts.
Nonetheless, it’s a good storyline for the introduction of the four characters, which, on the other hand, is quite disappointing due to its short duration.
Each character has their own unique abilities, for example, Arthur can command his unit to suppress fire/cove fire, while Jackson can aimbot.
Of the four characters, I was only impressed by Polina Petrova’s storytelling, which not only presented an army drama, but also presented how cruel the Nazi soldiers were during the world war. In my opinion, his life journey from a Russian army medical soldier who was trained by his father to become a sniper is full of emotion and drama that builds his character until he finally takes revenge on Freisinger.
The three other characters such as Arthur, Wade, and Lucas also have a certain grudge against Freisinger that is told in each of his missions. Unfortunately, the three of them are not as memorable as Polina for me personally because they are quite ordinary.
Indeed, the three characters other than Polina are not as good as Polina in terms of writing. Their story feels ordinary compared to the extraordinary Polina who struggles alone to lose everything. For me this is a minus that should not be done and makes the story seem rushed to introduce the four.
One that almost made me feel at home was Wade’s mission as a pilot to destroy the Japanese army. He will not only bomb Japanese warships from the air, but also missions on the ground with a team of ground troops.
Throughout the campaign, you will be able to see lots of cutscenes with transitions between cutscenes in-game that are very slick and feel seamless without certain transitions. Make it more immersive and interactive.
It’s undeniable that Sledgehammer Games is really good at making cutscenes and cinematics that make Call of Duty: Vanguard feels like playing an interactive movie rather than a video game.
The mono color they offer also makes the world war feel even more tense. You will find it difficult to shoot enemies because of rain, fog, or dark night conditions.
Some of the character’s acting is also quite impressed me. Especially the antagonists who have amazingly cool acting. You can feel and see the faces of fear, suspicion, and evil from each of the antagonists who are described very well. I personally am not good at judging how the acting is, but I didn’t find anything odd, awkward, and strange throughout the character’s acting until the end.
I didn’t find too many problems in the campaign other than the AI bug which was stupid enough to not shoot, and the bossfight which I thought was unnecessary and too “fantasy” for a realistic setting.
The gunfight is really topnotch because in the end Sledgehammer Games managed to achieve the standard gunfight series Call of Duty in his own way. They still prioritize realism and will not make lightning-fast reload animations like the series made by developers Call of Duty other. You will reload slowly and have to be patient so you don’t rush if you don’t want to die silly because you’re reloading.
Changing weapons also can’t be as fast as lightning, there is a long animation pause until finally you can hold the second weapon. From here I understand that this game cannot be treated the same as the previous series.
While the multiplayer version is pretty fun and up to par Call of Duty usually. You can find a very strong sense of gunfight, how good the sound design is, and of course the running animation, first-person, and others that feel more realistic.
One thing you can’t find in multiplayer Call of Duty: Vanguard is the disappearance of the red dot on the mini map when the enemy does not use a suppressor. This is intentional so that players can focus on what is in front of them. You can restore this feature by using the UAV/Intel killstreak for some time.
For me personally, if you play this game only for the campaign, then I think you can skip it and maybe focus on saving and buying a sequel. Modern Warfare which was rumored to be released next year by Infinity Ward. This is because the story is clear Modern Warfare Reboot better than Vanguard.
But if you’re just looking for multiplayer, then Vanguard is the right choice. Of course not for those of you who like bars because it’s a little slower than the series Call of Duty usually. If I had to rate this game by numbers, then 7 is not an exaggeration.
