Spacious and minimalist, even too much
Dashboard and controls
Minimalist but also well done, they deliver few physical commands (above and behind the steering wheel) as well as the one for the “four arrows” (which is on the ceiling: very inconvenient). The 15” central display plays a fundamental role, and even replaces the dashboard: the speed, and a few other data concerning the car, are in the upper left corner; a head-up display would be nice. Almost everything can be controlled from the screen, even the “climate” flows: there are no air vents, and the air comes out of a slot above the profile of the dashboard. From the screen you can also manage the security systems, use the pre-installed video games, watch videos (from YouTube to Netflix), surf the web, view a lit fireplace and more. Lots of them unique functions; such as the “Dog” and “Camp” (camping) modes, which maintain the desired temperature for hours when the car is parked. With the first, the screen also informs those outside that the animal in the car is fine.
Responsive like the best tablets, infotainment has tons of features, but not Android Auto and Apple CarPlay; for many, like Spotify, you need a Premium subscription. Once the destination has been set, the navigator shows which column of the house to stop at and for how long. There are two plates for wireless charging of mobile phones, the inclination of which also allows you to see the mobile phone screen: useful if, for example, you want to use the navigator on your smartphone. With the lever to the right, on the steering column, the forward or reverse gear is controlled. While driving, depressing it once activates adaptive cruise control; with two taps, the Autopilot. In gear, clickable wheels in the spokes control audio, voice commands and adaptive cruise control; when stationary, also the position of the mirrors and steering wheel and the beam of the headlights.
Habitability
Lots of space, even for those traveling behind. And, despite the battery in the floor, you don’t sit on the sofa with your “knees in your mouth” as in some rivals. Coated with one soft synthetic leather, the seats are heated and have electric adjustment (all standard); however, that of the extension of the cushion present in some rivals is missing. The seat belt adjusts for height. The white instead of black upholstery is optional, and brings with it the band of the same color (instead of wood) on the dashboard. The sofa is flat, suitable for three, and the seats in the back also enjoy the panoramic roof (fixed and without curtain, but burnished). The LED reading lights are brilliant; rear air vents and two USB sockets (type C) for recharging are standard.
Trunk
Compared to its rivals, the trunk of the Tesla Model Y it is much deeper (even by 30 cm): the house does not declare the capacity with the sofa in use, but, measurements in hand, it is among the largest (even without counting the false bottom). The backrest is also good, divided into three parts and which descends automatically by activating two electric controls, but the load retaining rings. The false bottom is divided into two parts: the first is shallow, because the engine is underneath, while the one closest to the access threshold has a height of 36 cm and can also contain a bag. The side pockets are useful and the front compartment is large, 117 liters and which opens with an electric command (on many rivals a mechanical release is needed near the pedals, as for the bonnets of cars with internal combustion engines).
