JAKARTA – Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) says new social media network Truth Social former President Donald Trump’s creation violated the open source software license agreement. Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) has 30 days to comply with the license terms before access is terminated.

Quoted from The Verge, Saturday (10/23/2021), SFC said, anyone can freely reuse the Mastodon code. But they must comply with the Affero General Public License or AGPLv3 governing the code.

SFC sees Truth Social not complying with that license and in fact the social media is proprietary. The developers seem to be trying to remove the references that made the Mastodon connection obvious.

“Those licenses deliberately treat everyone as equals, but they must operate under the same rules of the copyleft license that apply to everyone else. Today, we see the Trump Media and Technology Group ignoring that important rule,” wrote SFC policy partner Bradley Kuhn in a blog post.

Truth Social it hasn’t officially launched yet but users can access the test version of the platform, where many of them created prank accounts that flooded the service with fake company announcements and even fake Donald Trump posts.

SFC requested that TMTG offer all of these users access to Truth Social’s source code. “If they fail to do this within 30 days, their rights and permissions in the software will be automatically and permanently terminated,” Kuhn said.

If Truth Social fails to provide the source code, the SFC can sue it for violating the terms of the license it uses. Earlier this year, the group sued electronics maker Vizio over the same issue.

“We will be following this matter very closely and demand that the Trump Group provide appropriate resources to all who use the site,” Kuhn wrote.

Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko said he would take legal action on this issue. “Compliance with our AGPLv3 license is very important because it forms the basis on which I and other developers are willing to give it away for free,” he told Talking Points Memo.
