Trust in Ukrainian Officials Survey: Zelensky, Pritula, Klitschko, and More

The level of trust in Zelensky has decreased compared to May 2022, when 90% of Ukrainians trusted him and 7% did not trust him.

Next comes TV presenter Sergei Pritula, who is trusted by 69%, distrusted by 25% (trust indicators have slightly worsened compared to May 2022).

The top three also includes the mayor of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko with indicators of trust of 52% and distrust – 43%. However, in the case of Klitschko, there is a fairly significant drop in trust – in May 2022, 74% trusted him, 18% did not trust him.

Next comes a group of politicians who are trusted by a fairly significant proportion of respondents, although they have a negative balance of trust-distrust. Thus, 33% of respondents trust the head of the Presidential Office Andrey Yermak, 51% do not trust (in May 2022 the ratio was 43% versus 23%, that is, they trusted much more).

Petro Poroshenko is the only one on the list whose trust indicators are now better than in May 2022. Thus, 27% now trust the fifth president, 68% do not trust (in May 2022 the ratio was 16% versus 80%).

Also in this group, MP Dmitry Razumkov, who is trusted by 25%, is not trusted by 37% (in May 2022 it was 35% versus 25%), although in his case it should be taken into account that 33% do not know him.

Also on the list were ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, leader of the OPZZh party Yuriy Boyko and former adviser to the Presidential Office Alexei Arestovich. Tymoshenko is now trusted by 10%, distrusted by 87% (in May 2022, 18% trusted her, 74% distrusted her). Boyko is trusted by 9%, distrusted by 71% (previously the ratio was 11% versus 66%).

The attitude towards Arestovich became diametrically opposed. In May 2022, the majority of Ukrainians trusted him – 62% versus 21%. As of December 2023, 11% trust him, 78% do not trust him.

Different survey methodologies

As sociologists note, data were previously released showing that the President of Ukraine is trusted by 62% of Ukrainians. But respondents had the option to select the “difficult to answer” option. If they ask about trust in Zelensky (as a person) and the option “I find it difficult to answer” is not offered, then 77% answer that they trust him, 22% do not trust him.

“The reading or not reading of the option “I find it difficult to answer” has an impact, and besides, Zelensky as a person may be perceived more clearly by ordinary respondents than the more abstract institution of the President of Ukraine,” sociologists note.

The survey was conducted on December 4-10, 2023 among 1,200 respondents in all regions except the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbass, as well as territories where there is no Ukrainian mobile communication at the time of the survey.

Let us recall that the KIIS survey showed a decline in trust in the Ukrainian authorities. The Armed Forces retain absolute trust in society – 96%. In addition, 88% of Ukrainians trust the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny (only 4% do not trust).
