Truss promises more military aid to Ukraine

Ahead of the general UN debate, British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced billions of additional military aid to Ukraine. “The UK will continue to stand behind you, every step of the way. Your safety is our safety,” Truss told reporters on Tuesday in the direction of Kiev. This year alone, London’s aid to Kiev will reach at least the promised 2.3 billion pounds (about 2.62 billion euros).

Truss also acknowledged that Britain’s post-Brexit trade deal with the US is unlikely to be finalized in the coming years. There are currently no “negotiations” on this with Washington and he does not expect them to “begin in the short or medium term,” Truss said. The White House had expressed dissatisfaction with London’s tough stance towards the EU following London’s departure, including the Northern Ireland issue.

The trip to the UN General Debate is Truss’s first overseas visit, who took office on 6 September. In New York, Truss will meet, among others, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
