Trump’s Re-election: Opposition and Reluctance from Former Government Members

Trump, who is surrounded by legal problems and indictments, is trying once again to become the president of the United States in the 2024 election.

But very many of the people Trump himself chose to place in his government when he was president last time are very reluctant to see him move into the White House again. It shows a comprehensive review NBC News have done.

The TV channel has asked 44 of them if they support Trump’s re-election. Most would not respond, and only four have publicly given wholehearted support to Trump’s candidacy.

Several are also very reluctant to take a position publicly while the Republican nomination battle is about to start. Others are very clear that they believe Trump is completely unfit for another term in the White House.

Trump’s gig bill

– Strongly against

– I have made it clear that I am strongly against Trump being nominated, and I will not give a statement of support to Trump, says Trump’s attorney general until December 2020, Bill Barr, to NBC News.

– I will jump from that bridge when I get there, he says when asked how he will vote in the presidential election if it is between Trump and the incumbent Democratic president Joe Biden.

Members of Trump’s government have gained a completely unique insight into how Trump works and leads government work. However, experts believe that Trump acted in a way that caused former associates to continue to support him.

– They are not friends. They don’t hang around forever. They’re going to disappear, or in some cases he’s going to push them out,” Barbara Perry, director of presidential studies at the University of Virginia, told NBC News about the relationship between Trump and members of the administration.

Now he regrets it – again

The four who publicly give their full support to Trump are former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker, his last chief of staff, Mark Meadows, former budget chief Russell Vought and former acting director of national intelligence, Richard Grenell.

Ended in protest

There was a very large pull through in the leading positions during Trump’s presidency. An analysis from the Brookings Institution think tank showed that the turnover in the last year Trump was in the White House was far greater than that of any president since Ronald Reagan in the 1980s.

“Embarrassing” photos go viral

Two cabinet members, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, resigned in protest after the deadly attack on Congress on January 6, 2021.

– It is not possible to ignore the influence your rhetoric had on the situation, DeVos wrote in her resignation to Trump.

Among those who no longer support Trump are his former secretary of state and CIA chief Mike Pompeo, former defense secretary Pat Shanahan, former chief of staff John Kelly and two of his former intelligence chiefs Joseph Maguire and Dan Coats.

Another former chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, hopes Trump loses the nomination battle.

– I work hard to ensure that someone else becomes a presidential candidate. I think he is the Republican most likely to lose the primary of all the leading candidates. If anyone can lose to Joe Biden, it’s him, says Mulvaney to NBC News.

– Not suitable

Former Defense Secretary Mark Esper speaks CNN that he has no plans to support Trump.

– He is not suitable to be president because he puts himself first, and I believe that anyone running for office should put the country first, says Esper.

Two of Trump’s former cabinet members, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley and Vice President Mike Pence, are also challenging Trump himself in the nomination battle.

Former Transportation Secretary Chao, who is also married to the Republican leader of the Senate, Mitch McConnell, has been publicly bullied by Trump several times for his Asian background. Among other things, he has called her “Coco Chao”.

Arousing attention in Norway

– When I was young, there were people who deliberately misspelled or mispronounced my name. Asian Americans have worked hard to change the experience for the next generation. He doesn’t seem to get it, and that says a lot more about him than it does about any Asian-American, says Chao.

Trump’s first defense secretary, James Mattis, has made harsh statements against him after the attack on Congress.

– His use of the presidency to destroy our confidence in elections, and to poison the respect of our fellow citizens has been made possible by pseudo-political leaders. The country will survive this “stain”, while Trump will quite deservedly become a man without a country, Mattis added Politico.
