Trump, in turn, sued Carroll for libel after she claimed after the statement on news channel CNN that he had raped her. The jury in the case won by Carroll had found rape alone unproven.
The judge said that Trump’s defamation claim should be dismissed because Carroll’s statements contain at least some truth. Trump was also unable to demonstrate that Carroll had bad intentions with the statements.
‘Reputation shattered’
Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a department store fitting room in the 1990s, and of libel. She was seeking compensation for the psychological suffering allegedly inflicted on her. In May, she told the jury that Trump had shattered her reputation by calling her a liar. She says she has kept the rape secret for decades for fear that Trump would destroy her. Trump has always denied assaulting or slandering Carroll.
