Trump will hold 770 documents from the Congress storming secret doctor – NRK Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

The list includes 770 documents, call logs, agendas and handwritten notes, mostly from the time around the attack on Congress on 6 January.

Among them are papers for his closest associates, including handwritten notes from Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.

The list also includes the official calendar of the White House where all his activities, travels, telephone conversations, visits and briefings are listed, notes to Press Officer Kayleigh McEnany and the draft speech he gave on January 6, where he encouraged people to march to Congress .

It is the committee in the House of Representatives that is investigating the events of January 6 and Trump’s attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the election in November last year, which has demanded documents handed out.

Asks for legal protection

Trump has referred to what in the United States is called “executive privilege,” that is, the legal protection of the power of the presidency, to prevent documents from being disclosed.

The Supreme Court has previously approved that presidents can keep certain documents away from the public in order to make communication with employees easier and more open. But it is not clear whether a former president can point to such protection.

President Joe Biden has so far rejected the demand for protection, arguing that “it is necessary to shed light on the background to the most serious attack on the federal government since the civil war”, as adviser Dana Remus puts it.

The case is likely to trigger a lengthy tug-of-war in the courts over congressional authority to scrutinize the executive branch, and the right of a former president to oppose such attempts.

It can take many months before Congress has access to documents.
